Sample IDW/ICE Course Outlines
Certification Workshops and Exams can be delivered as stand-alone events (ie.
Intro Canoe), or as multi-plex workshops (ie. Essentials Canoe and Kayak).
The IDW may be taught early in the season followed by an ICE at a later date.
The ACA specifies the number of hours necessary to adequately cover all the
required skills and topics in an IDW/ICE event.

Sample IDW & ICE Course Outline*:
L1 Intro 2 Day IDW/ICE (16 hours)
Day One: 8:30 am – 5:30 pm
- ACA Orientation; Teaching & Learning Theory ; Dryland Training
- Strokes, Maneuvers and Rescue Sessions
Day Two: 8:30 am – 5:30 pm
- On Water Exam Session
- Strokes & Maneuvers Check-off
- On Water Teaching
- Candidate Lecture Presentations
- Summary & Evaluations
L2 Essentials 2-Plex IDW/ICE (28 hours / 2.5 days) usually a weekend event
Day One: 6:00 pm – 9:30 pm
- ACA Orientation; Teaching & Learning Theory; Dryland Training
Day Two: 9:00 am – 5:30 pm
- Strokes, Maneuvers, Rescue Sessions (Solo/Tandem Canoe & Kayak)
Day Three: 9:00 am – 5:30 pm On Water Exam Session
- Strokes & Maneuvers Check-off
- On Water Teaching
- Candidate Lecture Presentations
L2 Essentials 4-Plex IDW/ICE (36-44 hours; 5 days or 4 days & 3 evenings)
Day One: 9:00 am – 9:45 am
- Strokes, Maneuvers (Solo/Tandem Canoe & Kayak)
- ACA Orientation Teaching & Learning Theory
- Teaching Assignments & Prep
Day Two: 9:00 am – 5:30 pm

Location/Venue:
- The Flatwater classes are
taught on a quiet lake, pond or
pool. Flat water, protected from
wind, wave and boat traffic.
- The River Class is taught on flat
water, progressing to moving
water with rapids up to and
including Class I/II.
- Access to shore, restroom
facilities and shelter is required.
